Bhangra Becomes Mainstream in Yuba City

November 3, 2004

Second annual Way Way Way of Broadway show in Yuba City was sold out event attended by over 800 people, held at main hall in Yuba Sutter Fairgrounds. This event was a fund raising event for non profit foundation to rebuilt Sutter Theater (future site for performing arts) in the heart (down town) of Yuba City. So far Yuba City lacks any quality auditorium. Each person paid $50 to $65 to attend this event. There were more than 15 performances by mainstream performers. There was only one ethnic item performed by more than 20 Punjabi American performers which stole the show by receiving standing ovation. This item was directed by Harjit Singh and it included glimpses of Bhangra and Giddha-both modern and traditional steps and moves, it ended with loud beats of Dhol by Amar Singh Gill. Punjabi American Heritage Society plays very active role in this area to built bridges with mainstream community and every effort is made to participate in local community events.
